A man attempted to sexually assault a 7-year-old girl Wednesday morning during a home burglary on Indianapolis' west side, police said.

Shortly after 5:30 a.m., a man broke into a home on South Belmont Avenue and attempted to sexually assault the girl, according to a release from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Police said an item was taken from the home, but investigators are not releasing what that item was.

Residents in the area are advised to "remain vigilant" and ensure doors and windows are locked, police said.
