A young, grieving woman is consoled at the scene of Indianapolis' second fatal shooting Aug. 31, near 34th Street and N. Sherman Drive.

Update: Police arrested an Indianapolis man they say shot and killed a man who had robbed him at an east-side gas station on Wednesday.

The deadly events began when Michael Johnson pulled a seemingly deadly gun and robbed James Holder about 3:30 p.m. at a Shell gas station at 34th Street and Sherman Drive, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Sgt. Kendale Adams said.

Johnson walked away after the robbery. Holder grabbed his own handgun and pulled the trigger, Adams said.

Johnson, 29, Indianapolis, died at the scene. Police recovered a toy airsoft pistol from Johnson's pocket, Adams said.

Holder, 27, remained at the gas station and spoke to police when they arrived. Holder was held Thursday in the Marion County Jail on a preliminary charge of murder, records show.

Police were still investigating another fatal shooting on Wednesday that left a man dead in the 3700 block of Market Street.

Earlier: Indianapolis police are investigating after two separate shootings left two dead on the city's east side Wednesday.

Police were called to the 3700 block of Market Street just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to reports of several people fighting, according to IMPD Officer Jim Gillespie.

When officers arrived, they found Deandre Johnson, 22, suffering from at least one gunshot wound, according to a news release.

Johnson, who lives in Indianapolis, was taken in critical condition to Eskenazi Hospital, but later died.

Neighbors and family members gathered at the scene, where emotions ran high.

IMPD does not have any information on a possible suspect at this time, according to the release.

An hour later, IMPD officers responded to an incident at the Shell gas station at 34th and Sherman, where they found 29-year-old Michael Johnson fatally shot between pumps two and five.

People congregate at the crime scene tape cordoning off a Shell gas station near 34th Street and Sherman Drive where a man was gunned down next to the pumps on Aug. 31.

Crime scene investigators were still processing the scene as a large group of onlookers and family gathered on the sidewalk.

A woman who identified herself as a cousin of the victim said she had been called by another family member to the gas station. She said police hadn't told her anything.

"It's loss," she said. "I feel lost."

A person of interest has been detained, Gillespie said. No additional information is available at this time.
