Mayor Joe Hogsett announced he will erect 100 new street lights in Indianapolis, ending a 36 year ban

The city this morning announced the installation of the first wave of 100 new street lights.

Mayor Joe Hogsett held a news conference to announce the locations for 25 new lights and explain the site selection process.

City officials said they picked sites where safety could be most improved and on streets that were especially dark. Chief of Staff Thomas Cook said input from Indianapolis police, citizens, neighborhood groups and Indianapolis Power & Light was considered before a decision was made.

The city has tentatively identified most of the locations where the rest of the 100 lights are needed most, but IPL needs to first determine whether connections can be made.

Since Hogsett announced the program in June and the first light was installed, about 475 requests for new lights have been submitted to the city, officials said.

The construction of the lights ends a 36-year moratorium on new street lights that began under Mayor William Hudnut as a way to keep the city's electrical expenses down.
