1 killed in Hamilton County crash

A 29-year-old Elwood man was killed in a car crash in northeast Hamilton County on Friday night.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office said a blue 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier was headed east on 296th Street east of Carpenter Road at about 10:33 p.m. when the driver veered  off the road, flipping the car after hitting a utility pole. A passing driver saw the car in a field near the county line between Hamilton and Tipton counties.

The driver of the Cavalier, 29-year-old Steven O'Neal, was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was in the car.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, but they believe high water from recent rains could be a factor.
