The windshield wipers swished back and forth, pointing straight up toward the sky. It was the only sign of motion on the car where a woman was found dead Saturday night near a west-side gas station.

Police originally thought the car had crashed, because it had three wheels up on the sidewalk and broken glass all over the driver's side, said Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Capt. Rebecca Lake. But once they looked closer, they realized the woman appeared to be dead from a gunshot wound.

IMPD is investigating the woman's death as a homicide and are still looking for a potential suspect. After searching for about an hour, police moved from an active search to just canvassing for the suspect, Lake said. As the case is still an active investigation, police were not able to give many details.

They found the woman near Michigan Street and Belmont Avenue, just past the Marathon gas station.

IMPD Officer Patrick Snyder said the woman was around age 20 to 30 and had been killed around 9:30 p.m.

No weapons have been found, Lake said, and the victim has not yet been identified.
