Officials say an Indiana State University died during a fraternity event in Illinois.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Officials say an Indiana State University freshman has died after apparently falling from a boat into a small pond during a fraternity event in Illinois.

The school announced Sunday that Yiorgo Karnezis of Munster, Indiana, died during a Sigma Chi fraternity social event in the rural community of Dennison, Illinois.

The Clark County, Illinois, sheriff’s department responded early Sunday and said the victim was pronounced dead at a hospital. Cause of death wasn’t immediately released.

Willie L. Banks Jr., vice president for student affairs, said in a statement the school extends “our deepest and sincerest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.” The school suspended Sigma Chi’s operations amid an investigation, as is typically done in such cases.

Grief counseling is available at Indiana State University.
