Speeding driver dies after striking utility pole
A 30-year-old male driving at high speeds slammed into a utility pole in Indianapolis and was killed early Saturday morning, according to Fox59.com.
The driver’s 2002 Ford Taurus was headed eastbound on 9144 Maze Road in the southeast corner of Marion County before hitting the pole. Police pronounced him dead at the scene.
The crash’s impact broke the pole in two and knocked out power in the immediate area. Rescuers couldn’t safely approach the car because of the live wires down on it.
“You want to be that first responder, you want to make sure to see if you can render any aid. And in this situation, they just weren’t able to do so for several minutes until Power and Light was able to get down here and make the scene safe,” said Capt. Harold Turner of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
The crash was discovered by another driver passing by after it happened. Because there were no witnesses to the incident and no cameras in the area, police don’t know how long the man was in the car.
Investigators say it’s clear the driver was going well over the posted 40 mph speed limit, and alcohol was found in the car.
“The impact and the crash damage on the vehicle is so severe, it’s actually hard to tell whether or not they were wearing a seatbelt. First appearance, it would appear no, the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. But that’s undetermined,” said Turner.
Toxicology reports are still pending.
