Hot Property: Forest Hills Tudor features a modern twist

Inside, the house retains a number of original features, such as the windows, many of them with stained-glass panels.

From the curb, the house looks like a prim English Tudor, complete with red brick, stained-glass windows and a turret-like curved door. But enter the home, head upstairs and to the rear, and you’ll find a master suite that’s nothing but modern with an elevated ceiling and a nautical theme and a state-of-the-art bathroom that pulls out all the stops.

Below that addition sits another anachronism — as well as a rarity for the home’s Forest Hills neighborhood: a three-car garage.

“It’s like the best of the old,” said the homeowner, who has lived there for a decade. “It’s unique.”

Another major selling point for the home is its proximity to the Monon Trail. The backyard has a gate that opens directly onto  the popular rail-to-trail.

The yard also features a patio with a hot tub.

“It’s really, really private, but you can open up the gate and get right on the Monon,” said Emily Stewart, a Realtor with F.C. Tucker.

Inside, the house retains a number of original features, such as the windows, many of them with stained-glass panels. Even the basement door is adorned with stained glass.

Over the years, though, owners have made their own improvements. At some point, a previous owner added a sunroom off the living/dining room space.

Then there’s the master suite. Even historical purists might forgive the architectural deviation in this part of the house. A curved hallway creates a small sitting antechamber to the bedroom, which features a raised ceiling and ample windows to flood the room with natural light.

The master  bath features a side-by-side bubble tub and shower. Other luxury touches include  a small fridge in the bedroom and a walk-in closet.

A previous owner, who happened to be a contractor, designed the space with a nautical theme in mind, the most recent owner said.

“He liked boats,” she said. “If you walk in, it kind of looks like a sailboat.”

The nautical theme continues in the basement, where the previous owner wrapped the columns in sisal-like rope and ran  more “rigging” up the stairs.  He also turned the basement into a “man cave,” complete with a kegerator and a half bath with a urinal.

“It’s kind of a party basement,” Stewart said.

Having little use for a man cave herself, the most recent owner added new flooring and surround sound to the space.

Upstairs, she retained another feature left by a previous owner. In two of the three original bedrooms, hand-painted murals grace the walls. In one room, pink florals and bees dance on the walls. In another, an animal scene amuses.

While the  owner did not have children herself, her two nieces loved visiting the pink room and she kept the murals intact.

“I just didn’t have the heart to paint over the jungle room,” she said.
