Purdue beats Butler and heads to the Sweet 16

Purdue met Butler in the second round of the NCAA tournament Sunday, but there was injury news on both sides before tipoff. The Boilers beat the Bulldogs in the Crossroads Classic. Isaac Haas' mother is none too pleased that he couldn't play.

Final: Purdue 76, Butler 73

Vincent Edwards scores 20 points while only taking 8 shots from the field. P.J. Thompson adds 14, Carsen Edwards 13, Dakota Mathias 11 -- including a key last-minute 3 -- and Matt Haarms has 7 points and 6 rebounds.

Kelan Martin has 29 points for Butler, giving him 2,047 for his career -- second in Bulldogs history. Kamar Baldwin scores 14.

Purdue, which earned its school-record 30th win of the season, plays Texas Tech in the Sweet 16. Butler finished 21-14.

Purdue has had instances this season in which it struggled to hold double-digit leads. Butler has experience battling back from such deficits.

Pregame

Purdue coach Matt Painter ruled out center Isaac Haas, who suffered a broken right elbow in a first-round victory over Cal State Fullerton. Tyler Trent of The Exponent reported that Haas' elbow brace wasn't approved for use in the game.

Butler's Paul Jorgensen, who twisted an ankle against Arkansas in the first round, is cleared to play.
