U2 plans first Indianapolis show since 2001

Rock band's ‘Joshua Tree’ anniversary tour will visit Lucas Oil Stadium

U2 will celebrate the 30th anniversary of "The Joshua Tree" album in Indianapolis, where the Irish rock band played one of its most unusual shows of 1987.

Bono, the Edge, Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton will perform Sept. 10 at Lucas Oil Stadium. Tickets, $35 to $290, go on sale at 10 a.m. June 12.

U2 in Indy:Opening act announced

When appearing at the bygone RCA Dome (known then as the Hoosier Dome) in 1987, U2 played a handful of songs disguised as fictional country band the Dalton Brothers before the quartet's headlining set.

The Dalton Brothers made their debut on Nov. 1, one day after Halloween.

"I seem to remember that we were greeted with a kind of abject indifference," guitarist the Edge told IndyStar in 2001. "Only about the first two rows of people actually realized what was going on. Everyone else was busy getting popcorn and programs."

U2 is performing "The Joshua Tree," a diamond-certified album for sales of 10 million copies, in its entirety on the band's current tour. Signature hits "Where the Streets Have No Name," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "With or Without You" lead off the 11-song recording.
