Why Mike Pence named his puppy Harley

Vice President Mike Pence gives two thumbs up to the crowds Jan. 20, 2017, while walking in the Inaugural Parade.

Vice President Mike Pence may not have gotten exactly what he asked for this Father's Day, but he made the best of it.

The former Indiana governor and his family welcomed new pup Harley over the weekend, and Pence told the story behind the pup's name during an address to the National Association of Manufacturers summit Tuesday afternoon.

"I asked my wife for a motorcycle and I got a puppy," Pence said, "so I named it Harley."

So instead of a hog, Pence got a dog. And a cute one, to boot.

The family also welcomed a cat, Hazel, to the brood, which also includes Instagram-famous BOTUS (Bunny of the United States, of course), Marlon Bundo

Doesn't sound like Pence heeded the advice of former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, who wrote for Bloomberg in 2012 that prospective motorcycle buyers should leave their wives behind while shopping. "She is unlikely to appreciate the necessity of this purchase," he wrote.

There's always next year, right?
