Court docs: Suspect allegedly shot 1, stabbed another over weed belonging to 'Mexican Mafia'

Roger Ravell, 19

An Indianapolis man has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of one man and the stabbing of another.

Roger Ravell, 19, faces charges of murder, burglary, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury and battery by means of a deadly weapon in connection to the June 5 shooting of Christopher Curry on the city's east side.

Officers were called to a home in the 1400 block of Ridgeview Drive just before 1 a.m. on reports of a person shot, according to court documents detailing the investigation. There, officers found Curry outside the home with a gunshot wound to the face and another man, also outside, with duct tape wrapped around his head.

The man who had been duct taped told police he was letting someone named Roger have a package containing 20 pounds of marijuana delivered to his residence. On May 30, the man told police that Roger, later identified in a photo lineup as Ravell, showed up to the home and said the package had been delivered. The man said he told Ravell the package was never delivered.

The injured man told investigators Ravell said the package belonged to the "Mexican Mafia" and he "didn't want to see him get hurt" over it.

A few days later, according to court documents, the man awoke to the sight of four men standing over him, two of them allegedly holding shotguns.

That's when the man told police Ravell allegedly spoke up.

"I told you this would happen," the man remembered.

The men allegedly zip-tied the man's hands behind his back and wrapped duct tape around his face and head, according to court documents, leaving one of his eyes partially uncovered. He told police the men spoke to each other in Spanish, but spoke to him in English.

The man told police they then moved to the dining room, where he was put on his knees, stabbed in the shoulder and hit in the ribs with the barrel of a shotgun, according to court documents. He said the men continued to beat him as they searched the house for the weed.

Ravell then allegedly asked the man where his cellphone was before retrieving it in an attempt to call Curry. They were still in the garage when a car pulled into the driveway.

Two of the men "charged" down the the hallway, the injured man told police. Then there were gunshots.

The man said he stayed in the garage for a short time, not knowing if the men were still inside the home.

Both men were taken to Eskenazi Hospital, where Curry was later pronounced dead.

Ravell made his initial court appearance Friday. His trial is expected to begin Sept. 11, according to online court records.
