Tacos vs. burritos: The fight on Mexican food-rich Indianapolis menus

Indianapolis has landed on a list of U.S. cities with the most Mexican restaurants. And data shows we buck the nation's preference for tacos over burritos.

Indianapolis sits in 20th place on the list of cities with the most Mexican restaurants. Indy is a bit of an outlier on the list, though, with the majority of the top 25 cities being much larger (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago) or located in the southwest, where Mexican food is almost a way of life.

According to the data collected by Priceonomics Data Studio, Indianapolis has 64 Mexican restaurants. That number does include chains such as Taco Bell. Take the chains out and only count "authentic" Mexican restaurants and Indy still lands in 23rd place.

Data also shows that out of the top 25 cities, Indianapolis Mexican restaurant menus offer far more burritos than tacos. Indy restaurant menus are 62 percent burritos and just 38 percent tacos. If you want a burrito, Indy is your place! If you want tacos, head for San Antonio where menus are 84 percent tacos.

Burritos were most popular in Midwestern cities. Tacos tended to be the preferred fare in the Southwest.
